BIG BITCOIN® ANNOUNCES INITIATIVE TO SECURE CONTROL OF .BITCOIN

For years, Bitcoiners have comforted themselves with the illusion that nobody is in charge.

That era is ending.

As ICANN opens applications for new top-level domains, an effort is underway to secure .bitcoin before it falls into the wrong hands.

Fortunately, the wrong hands are already here.

Through the Big Bitcoin® Initiative, PODCONF intends to ensure that .bitcoin remains under the careful guidance of the people most qualified to decide who is, and who is not, sufficiently Bitcoin.

We applaud community leaders who recognize that decentralized systems function best when governed by committees.

WHY THIS MATTERS

If no “community” application succeeds, .bitcoin could be auctioned to the highest bidder.

That would be terrible.

Instead, it should be entrusted to a different group that assures everyone it represents “the community.”

History has shown that whoever controls the namespace controls the narrative.

We believe that narrative should be professionally managed.

OUR VISION

The .bitcoin namespace should become the official badge of ideological purity.

Applicants may be evaluated on factors including:

• Running Bitcoin infrastructure.
• Contributing code.
• Operating Bitcoin businesses.
• Publishing educational material.
• Organizing conferences.
• Demonstrating adequate levels of Bitcoin maximalism.
• Remaining in good standing with whichever committee currently defines Bitcoin.

Projects associated with altcoins, competing cryptocurrencies, independent thought, or insufficient enthusiasm may find themselves encouraged to pursue other naming opportunities.

This is how we preserve openness.

COMMUNITY GOVERNANCE

To eliminate centralization, authority will be distributed across a committee.

Committees have consistently demonstrated their ability to represent millions of people while requiring only a handful of votes.

Every decision will be made transparently behind closed doors.

PODCONF fully supports this proven governance model.

Some may argue that nobody should control .bitcoin.

These individuals clearly underestimate the dangers of allowing ordinary market forces to determine outcomes.

The alternative, of course, is allowing responsible adults to determine who deserves access.
